Santa Clara County

The sloughs and marshes of southern San Francisco Bay are vital to the survival of many species of animals and plants, including countless birds that reside here or stop to feed along their migratory routes. Most of the South Bay's wetlands, were systematically destroyed for other uses during the past century—converted to salt ponds, or filled in and planted with crops or built over. Then came the Save the Bay movement, and with it the beginning of shoreline restoration around the Bay.

Today, visitors to the South Bay will find plenty of recreational opportunities. Miles of accessible trails take you around the sloughs and marshes of the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve, a former dump site that has been transformed. Shoreline at Mountain View is a 750-acre recreation area where you can boat on a saltwater lake, fly a kite, hike the trails, and eat at a lakeside café. Alviso County Park, farther south, has miles of levee trails that wrap around adjacent salt ponds. For those who want to learn more about the natural history and ecology of this area—and, depending on the time of year, view a remarkable variety of birds—a trip to the 30,000-acre Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a must.
