For wheelchair riders, the main attractions of this series of rugged beaches along the San Mateo coast are the views of the ocean, coastal cliffs, and broad swaths of sand strewn with driftwood. Getting onto the beaches is difficult, although Pomponio and Pescadero (at the northernmost of three entrances) may be accessible to some who bring their own beach wheelchairs. Pescadero Beach has three entrances; I recommend the southernmost one, at Pescadero Road, for the view. A large, rough-surfaced parking lot there is situated well above the beach sand. Several picnic tables on a dirt pad, reached via a rocky, uneven dirt path, offer a beautiful view of the cliffs and waves. These may, with assistance, be accessible to some wheelchair riders.

Accessibility Details

The facilities listed below meet all of our access criteria unless otherwise noted.

Beach Wheelchair: No

Most beaches have accessible parking, with these exceptions: no access aisles at San Gregorio; the lot just south of the Pescadero Creek lot is undeveloped and has lots of potholes. All beaches have accessible pit toilets at the parking lots; none have sinks.

Accessible Picnic Tables: Limited Accessibility

San Gregorio and Pomponio Beaches have picnic tables near the parking lots, on level grassy areas that should be accessible to most wheelchair riders. Tables at San Gregorio have a water view.
